February 23, 2011: Marriage Equality USA applauds President Obama’s historic decision to declare his support for a heightened standard of review and to stop defending the “Defense of Marriage Act” in pending lawsuits challenging DOMA as unconstitutional. The Attorney General has confirmed that the Department of Justice will no longer defend the measure, which severely limits the potential of states to honor or carry out same-sex marriages, in court.  more…

Breaking: Olson and Boies file requests for the California Supreme Court to expedite Prop 8 case, and 9th Circuit to lift stay Source: Prop 8 Trial Tracker, Wednesday, 02/23/11

On February 23, 2011, Ted Olson and David Boies on behalf of the American Foundation for Equal Rights announced they are filing a request with the California Supreme Court to expedite the Perry v. Schwarzenegger (Prop 8) case and hear oral arguments by the end of May, before summer recess. They are also filing a “Motion to Vacate Stay Pending Appeal” with the 9th Circuit to lift the stay while the California Supreme Court takes its time. As you may recall, one week ago the California Supreme Court announced it would consider the question from the 9th Circuit regarding proponents’ standing, and would hear oral arguments in September.

ELECTION 2010: SUPPORT THE CANDIDATES WHO SUPPORT US
Now more than ever, candidates across the US are willfully attacking the gay community in an effort to rally the anti-gay vote.  We know it has been a rough financial year for many, but the time is NOW to give to the candidates running against those hate-filled individuals who seek to demean and destroy our families—and, in some cases. are calling to make our families ILLEGAL.  No joke.  Even if you can only give five bucks, do so.  We are millions strong in the US and, together with our straight allies, we can aid in the candidates who support our community. Every dime helps.
Just Married’s Friend vs Foe Donation List
FORMER GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN OFFICE: Governor, CA
Jerry Brown has been an incredible advocate for equality in California since 1975. Seriously, cats. And his opponent, Meg-a-Mill Whitman? Well, she is def anti-equality, no doubt.  Marriage matters, Meg.  We say so.  Forbes says so.  The majority of Americans say so.  Not Meg-a-Mill, though.  She’s even admits Brown was a very effective Governor.
SENATOR HARRY REID  OFFICE: Senate Nevada
All we can say is OMG OMG. Harry Reid’s opponent is Sharron Angle, a terribly anti-gay pathological liar. This is a VERY close race.  The very notion of this person actually running our government is enough to make our stomachs turn.  Angle is raising an incredible load of tea-baggin’ money, ya’ll. Donate to Reid. Seriously. Maddow explains just how the dough makes a difference.
TERRYL CLARK  OFFICE: House of Representatives, Minnasota
Her opponent, current house crazy Rep. Michelle Bachmann, says that gay people are “a part of Satan,” that being gay is “personal enslavement” and a mental disorder. She spoke out against the federal hate crimes bill that protects gays and lesbians, saying that the bill would protect pedophiles. She thinks it’s “child abuse” to teach that being gay is normal. Can we get some cash to Clark, my friends?

SENATOR PATTY MURRAY OFFICE: Senate, Washington
Senator Patty Murray received a perfect 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign. And her opponent Dino Rossi? We like his own description on ourcampaign.com: Conservative - Anti-Gay Marriage - Pro-Life - Pro-Tort Reform - Married.  Well how fortunate for you, Dino, that you can get married while millions of Americans await the same right.
MICHAEL BENNET  OFFICE: Senate, Colorado
Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet has unhesitatingly expressed support for LGBT issues. His opponent, Ken Buck, opposes letting gays serve openly in the military, “disagrees strongly with the concept of separation of church and state,” and hates Social Security. Oy.  There is more.  Yes, he is the guy that, as district attorney, refused to take a rape victim’s case, suggesting that the jury might view her allegations as a case of “buyer’s remorse.”
ALEXI GIANNOULIAS  OFFICE: House of Representatives, Illinois
Alexi Giannoulias is a democrat who believes that marriage equality and ending discrimination against the LGBT community is the civil rights issue of our time.  He says so on his campaign site.  Alexi is running against Illinois Congressman Mark Kirk, who recently voted against repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”—the law that forbids gay troops from serving openly—and opposes marriage equality. Nevermind the rumors that Kirk is yet another closeted gay voting against equality.  Ugh.  Let’s get Alexi elected!

ANDREW CUOMO  OFFICE: Governor, New York
Took his family to PRIDE NY 2010. Vows to make equality a reality in NY. A real family man with real family values for all. His opponent, Carl Paladino, thinks gay people are disgusting, saying that children should not be ‘brainwashed’ into thinking we are ‘acceptable.’ Paladino vows to veto equality, even if the NY Senate passes it.  We are not disgusting, Carl. You are, sir.
The control of the Senate, The House, California and New York is at stake here. As Rachel Maddow points out, the culture wars are on.  The tea-party and extreme right are using anti-gay ‘culture war’ campaigns to try to get into office. Our community and allies need to make sure these bigots don’t get elected. It is the only way to end this type of disgusting politics.

  5. John Cougar Mellencamp Tells NOM to back-off

It should be of no surprise to anyone fighting for marriage equality~ that the deceptively named “National Organization For Marriage” (NOM is against equal marriage rights for all) ~is up to their dirty tricks again.  This time they are trying to pull the wool over the American public’s eyes by making it look like John Cougar Mellencamp is on their side.  And well, he actually thinks we should have marriage equality in our “Little Pink Houses”.  And yes, that is the song they used.  Go figure.  Just when you thought they couldn’t look any more ignorant.  Snicker.  Reminds of the time they launched the site 2M4M.org  Hee Hee Hee Hee Ain’t that America home of the free ~Little pink houses for you and me!  Read the full story here on prop8trialtracker.com

  6. National Organization for Marriage drops $235K on Iowa TV campaign

Oy!  Maggie and her mob of malcontents are at it again.  Instead of focusing on their own families, if they indeed have one, they are dropping tons and tons of cash into Iowa to try to destroy the lives of happily married LGBT couples and to try to destroy the lives of three judges who enforced equal protection, as demanded by the Constitution.

Jason Hancock at the Iowa Independent reports that “the New Jersey-based anti-gay marriage group the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) spent more than $235,000 on a statewide television ad campaign calling for the rejection of  all three Iowa Supreme Court justices facing a judicial retention election in November” more…
