  1. A TRUE DEFENSE OF MARRIAGE:  A federal judge in Boston declared unconstitutional  the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).  A law that wrote discrimination into the constitution by baring federal recognition of same-sex marriage.

    SO NOW WHAT?

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley says in this video from last nights Rachel Maddow Show,  that although “Judge Tauro’s decision does not technically apply to other states,’’ it will apply  to the approximately 16,000 same-sex married couples in Massachusetts. They will now be eligible for the same 1138 federal rights, benefits and protections extended to married heterosexuals.  One small step forward for mankind.

  2. “Forty Year Later, Still Second-Class Citizens”

In yesterday’s New York Times, columnist Frank Rich penned one of the smartest, most poignant pieces on gay rights—from Stonewall to now—that we’ve read in a while. We especially love this quote (we’ve been thinking the exact same thing):

If the country needs any Defense of Marriage Act at this point, it would be to defend heterosexual marriage from the right-wing “family values” trinity of Sanford, Ensign and Vitter.

-Frank Rich, “Forty Years Later, Still Second-Class Americans,” The New York Times, June 28, 2009.

Our community’s got a great friend in Frank Rich.
